Pinewood Derby!

Should we cry or cheer?  Tonight we had our final Derby race.  McKay got creative and designed his "SNOWBOARD"!  It is not and will never be a skateboard...even if it does have wheels.  After cutting off the main portion of the wood, we then had to get it up to weight.  Lucky for us Chet helped us out.  McKay wanted to add some G.I. Joe boots on.  He couldn't figure out how to do the bindings.  Chet and McKay ended up putting b.b.'s in the boots and covering them with hot glue.  Inventive, huh!

After all of the hard work it was not the winning board.  But McKay was pleased with how it turned out.  Marcus drew some "sick" designs on the board and McKay painted it on with a paint pen.  He was pretty proud of how it turned out.  He is such an easy going kid, he always has a smile on his face.  Too bad his dad is better at numbers than at building a derby car, it would help if we were not running out the door putting the wheels on.

We ended up using  glue dots to stick the boots to the board, and then ended up digging 2 b.b's out to make weight.  Who knew glue dots were so heavy!  What a great group of boys, and the cars were amazing!

Another side note on McKay.  We also had an orthodontist appointment today, Whit was home with the coughing, sore throat yuck, so she kept Mia.  We had to run a few errands.  While we were grocery shopping,  an older gentleman was in one of the motorized carts.  The cute little man, knocked off a few cans.  Without hesitation, McKay went over and picked them up for him.  I just wanted to hug him.  What an awesome kid!   Taking scouting to heart:  Do a Good Turn Daily!

On one of his races he came over to me and said, "get ready mom this is going to be ugly! " And no he wasn't planning on winning!   What a great attitude.

MAN!! He sure looks handsome in a scout shirt. Sounds like he had a good time making the car and that is what counts. Some dads just take over and won't let their son do anything. We have even had a few dad races afterwards. Pretty sad!! I think it such a good lesson to learn that you don't have to win to have a good time. Good Job Mckay. Love the design!!!
